Q&A with Dr. Audrey Brown: Treating Infectious Disease and Undernutrition in Young Children
January 8, 2025PhF awardee Audrey Brown, PhD, of the University of Virginia, is researching the link between nutrition and infectious diseases in children.
Half of deaths among young children worldwide are linked to undernutrition, in part because these children are more likely to become ill with infectious diarrheal diseases.
Audrey Brown, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Virginia, received a 2024 PhRMA Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Translational Medicine for her research into the link between infections and nutrition.
Her lab discovered a single gene, called cAMP responsive element modulator (CREM), that protects against both low body weight and a common infectious diarrheal illness. Brown is exploring how CREM could be targeted for potential drug development to reduce the burden of these two prevalent childhood conditions.
