Q&A with Carol Morris: Developing a Therapeutic for Faster Stroke Treatment

May 13, 2024

Carol Morris, a graduate student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, is developing a multi-use therapeutic that can be delivered to patients faster after stroke.

For every minute that a patient goes untreated after having a stroke, they lose an average of 1.9 million neurons. The lack of blood flow to the brain deprives brain cells of oxygen, causing irreversible damage.

Carol Morris, a graduate student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, received a 2024 PhRMA Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship in Drug Discovery for her research to develop a multi-use therapeutic that can be delivered to patients faster after stroke.

“A great thing about this therapeutic is it doesn’t require deep freezing for storage like other therapeutics on the market,” Morris said. “This means it can be stored in an ambulance refrigerator, and that means the patient could potentially be treated faster.”
