$5,000 Challenge Award for Trainees

The PhRMA Foundation (PhF) and ISPOR’s journal Value in Health (ViH) are partnering on a Challenge Award competition that will award trainees for outstanding papers addressing the integration and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in health economics and outcomes research (HEOR).

PhF will provide the Challenge Award — a prize of $5,000 — to the first author of up to five winning papers, and ViH will publish these accepted manuscripts as part of its themed section on AI in HEOR. Additionally, PhF will pay ViH’s open-access publishing fee for each winning paper.

Deadline: December 1, 2024

  • The first author must be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, or medical resident. All award money will be distributed to the first author only.
  • Papers must be submitted by December 1, 2024.
  • Authors must indicate in their cover letter that the paper is for both the Artificial Intelligence in HEOR themed section and the PhRMA Foundation Challenge Award competition.
  • Employees of pharmaceutical companies are allowed to compete but are not eligible to receive award money due to restrictions on provision of financial awards by PhF.

PhF and ViH invite submissions for a themed section focused on the integration and impact of artificial intelligence in health economics and outcomes research. This issue will explore the role of AI technologies, with a special emphasis on the novel capabilities and applications of generative AI.

As AI continues to evolve, its application in HEOR has shown potential to revolutionize traditional methodologies and introduce new paradigms for analysis and decision making. This special section aims to capture a broad spectrum of AI innovations while highlighting the potential for generative AI as a transformative force within the field.

We encourage authors to submit original research, systematic reviews, perspective pieces, and case studies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Applications of Generative AI: Special attention will be given to submissions that focus on generative AI applications such as the development of new predictive models, generation of synthetic datasets, health economic models, evidence synthesis, and other novel uses of generative AI supporting applications in HEOR.

Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications of AI in HEOR: Critical examinations of the ethical concerns surrounding generative AI, such as privacy, bias, transparency, and the implications of AI-driven decisions in the context of HEOR.

Technological Challenges and Innovations: Reviews of technological advancements that address specific challenges in the application of AI in HEOR, such as improving the interpretability of generative AI models or integrating AI with existing healthcare IT infrastructures.

Regulatory and HTA Perspectives on AI: Insights from HTA bodies and regulatory agencies regarding the use of generative AI in submissions and evaluations. Discussions on the criteria and frameworks being developed to assess AI-driven research and tools in healthcare.

Authors should submit manuscripts through the journal’s online submission system by December 1, 2024. Authors must indicate in their cover letter that the paper is for both the Artificial Intelligence in HEOR themed section and the PhRMA Foundation Challenge Award competition.

Early submissions are welcomed and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. All submissions will undergo the journal’s peer-review process.

Challenge Award winners will be determined by PhF’s Value Assessment and Health Outcomes Research Scientific Advisory Committee. PhF will present the first author of up to five papers with a $5,000 Challenge Award.

After completion of the peer-review process, all papers accepted for publication by ViH will be published, but only those selected as winners by PhF will receive the $5,000 Challenge Award and payment for their open-access publication.
