Q&A with Dr. Emilie Duchesneau: Improving Health Research on Older Adults Using Medicare Advantage Data

August 13, 2024

PhF awardee Dr. Emilie Duchesneau is evaluating the accuracy of Medicare Advantage data to ensure health care researchers can reliably use the information to study diverse groups of older adults.

More than 67 million people are enrolled in Medicare, a publicly funded health insurance program for adults over age 65. Medicare data is a valuable resource for researchers studying the health of older adults.

Medicare has two types of plans: traditional fee-for-service (FFS) and Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage plans currently account for more than half of all enrollees, but historically, research based on Medicare data has mostly used FFS data because detailed information for Medicare Advantage was not available until 2019.

Emilie Duchesneau, PhD, an assistant professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, received a 2024 PhRMA Foundation Faculty Starter Grant in Value Assessment and Health Outcomes Research for her work evaluating the accuracy of this new Medicare Advantage data compared to FFS data to ensure researchers can reliably use the information to study diverse groups of older adults.
