Q&A with Dr. Briana Simms: Designing the Next Generation of Lipid Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery

PhRMA Foundation awardee Dr. Briana Simms of University of Cincinnati is developing improved lipid nanoparticles to better deliver medicines to the body.

Lipid nanoparticles are like small protective bubbles that are used to deliver medicines into the body. While they have shown great promise, improvements are needed in their overall stability, capacity for holding drugs, and ability to traffic drugs to specific locations in the body.

Briana Simms, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati, received a 2024 PhRMA Foundation Faculty Starter Grant in Drug Delivery for her work to develop a library of improved nanoparticles that have higher loading capacities and can better deliver medicines to specific tissues based on their structural composition.

Simms hopes this work will provide critical information that can help design the next generation of lipid nanoparticles. Watch this video to learn about Simms and her research.
