Q&A with Stephanie Zawada: Monitoring Mood Changes in Patients at Risk of Stroke

A leading cause of disability in the United States is cerebrovascular disease, or conditions like stroke that affect blood flow to the brain. Stephanie Zawada, MS, a PhD student at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, is conducting research to identify patients at increased risk for these conditions so that clinicians can provide treatments that may stop them from occurring.
Zawada received a 2023 PhRMA Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship in Value Assessment-Health Outcomes Research for her work using a smartphone app to remotely monitor patients who have previously experienced a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain, called a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Her goal is to generate evidence to inform the development of remote monitoring programs that can identify TIA patients at risk of a stroke by tracking psychological symptoms, which could be predictive of a stroke.
